Award-winning Renovation

Heiwa Terrace has been a beacon of affordable housing in Uptown since 1978, but the 13-story 204-unit building needed modern renovations so it could continue to provide quality housing for seniors and individuals with disabilities. The Heiwa Terrace Housing Board and Related Midwest spearheaded a tenant-in-place rehabilitation, designed by LBBA, to overhaul the building with numerous exterior improvements, a reconfigured and brightened ground floor with community activity spaces, and upgraded units tailored to senior residents. LBBA’s culturally responsive design includes important elements such as open and accessible tenant gathering spaces, art installations and a Japanese garden. LBBA’s redesign of Heiwa Terrace serves as a model for modernization of Chicago’s aging, but critically important, affordable housing.
